Comment(s): Wise Women, Witches, and Waifs: The Presentation of Women in German Fairy Tales This class is offered as a GRMN 481 Special Studies course, but any student can take it as a free elective. It will be taught in English. We will be looking at the different types of women we encounter in selected fairy tales (e.g; the stepmother, the stepsister, the witch, the "good" daughter, etc.), and analyzing what their function in the tale is, how they are perceived by the reader, what restrictions fairy tale society imposes upon them, how fairy tale women are socialized, and whether there might be subversive aspects to their role that are not obvious at first glance. Readings will be in English. Students who take this class to fulfill the requirements for a German Minor will have to read some texts and do certain assignments in German.
