Comment(s): Religion and Sexual Diversity This course examines the ways in which various forms of sexual and affectional orientation and practice have been valued or de-valued by religious traditions. In the Western world traditions, the mainstream emphasis on monogamous sexual relationship for the purpose of procreation may lead one to believe that "correct" sexuality is narrowly defined in religion. When one looks at the mystic traditions of the West, at the traditions of Asia, at archaic and at primal religions, however, one finds a much more varied approach, including the association of sexuality with sacrality, the employment of sexual metaphor to express the experience of the holy and the veneration of persons who stand outside "standard" gender constructs. This is not a course that seeks to judge sexual or religious standards but, rather to understand how and why human sexuality has been apprehended, reflected and determined in religion. Prerequisite: RLST major/minor, WMST minor or permission
