Services
  • Each semester the Women’s Studies Program conducts or cosponsors a series of activities on campus. Over the past several years the program has sponsored numerous speakers, gender-balance conferences, several exhibits (e.g. a quilt exhibit, an artistic installation, and a curated art exhibit), an educational documentary exhibit, several concerts, a symposium, three regional conferences, receptions, forums, book discussions, colloquia, films and more.

Programs have been thematically organized to highlight specific issues or groups of women. Recent themes have included women in the future, daughters of the desert, mothers and daughters, international women, women in art, women in science, Native American women, ecofeminism and international Women’s Studies perspectives.

  • Minor in Women's Studies. IUP offers a minor in Women's Studies. The Women's Studies minor is designed to examine the status and experiences of women from a multidisciplinary perspective. The courses use a variety of methods and disciplinary perspectives to explore the impact of gender on the experiences of the individual. Women's contributions to a variety of fields and the historical, literary, and cultural images of women are also addressed. Students are encouraged to challenge traditional theories and research regarding women and to develop a critical, multidisciplinary, multicultural, and gendered view of the world. Courses taught within the minor typically involve the students through innovative, experiential classroom exercises and written assignments. Courses in Women's Studies address social equity issues and encourage students to perceive themselves as capable of transforming society.

A minor in Women's Studies indicates to the prospective employer an awareness of and sensitivity to gender issues. This awareness may be needed in the following positions: personnel specialist, affirmative action officer, crisis intervention specialist, family and youth services provider, legal advocate. A minor in Women's Studies can contribute to success in a variety of fields including communication, counseling, criminology, education, health, journalism, law, politics, psychology, and applied sociology. (IUP Catalog description of the minor program of study with links to descriptions of the courses.)

  • The Women’s Studies Program also publishes a monthly newsletter, The Women’s Times, which serves as a resource for information about Women’s Studies programming, community events, activism, opportunities for networking, and conference information. The newsletter also publishes original poetry, book and film reviews, editorials and other articles of interest to Women’s Studies students, minors, friends and faculty.

  • Women's Studies has a small collection of books of interest. You may browse in the library during the hours: 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Books may be borrowed for a two-week period. Also, films have been placed in the IUP library over the past several years which may be used for classes or viewed for personal interest.
