What are the Academic/Training Programs offered through IUP for which students are eligible to receive G.I. Bill benefits?

The Academic/Training Programs offered are:

  • Any course(s) leading toward a Standard (Associate, Bachelor, Master's or Doctorate) Degree at IUP for which students receive academic credit.

  • ACT 120/Police Academy

  • IUP Culinary Arts Academy

  • Internships (amount of entitlement depends on how many credits the internship carries)

What is the training time required?
    Standard College Degrees
  • Full - 12 credits or more (9 credits for graduate students)
  • 3/4 - 9 to 11 credits
  • 1/2 - 6 to 8 credits
  • 1/4 - 3 to 5 credits

    Summer Sessions:
  • Full - 7 credits or more (entire summer {sessions I and II combined})

    Non-College Degrees
  • Full - 40 hours/wk.
  • Part - 13 hours/wk.

What are steps are necessary for applying?
    1. Bring in the document that pertains to your benefit chapter (DD214, DD2384, or the dependent's "Certificate of Eligibility").
    2. Fill out the Application Form which pertains to the Benefit Chapter to which you are applying.
    3. Fill out the "General Information Sheet".
  • The Application Form and "General Information Sheet are obtainable at the Veterans Affairs Office, and can be obtained by contacting us by phone, mail, or e-mail.
  • You may also request to conduct this process by mail if visiting the Veterans Affairs Office is not convenient to you.
  • Transfer students who have received G.I. Bill at another institution need to complete only the VA form 22-1995 and a "General Information Sheet."
NOTE: Chapter 30 veterans may be submitted for eligibility or certification 30 days prior to the start of a semester. All others will be processed on the first day of the appropriate semester.

How do I make sure my benefits are continued from year to year?
  • If you experience a break in enrollment greater than 30 days, you must notifiy the IUP Veterans Affairs Office that you are returning to IUP.
*If you received benefits previously within the last two years (although one year may be safer to consider), the only information you need provide in contacting the Vets Office will be basic information such as your name and the number of credits which you plan to carry.

What should I do if I plan to take classes in the summer?
  • If you plan to take summer classes, contact the IUP Veterans Office after you have registered for the summer terms. Full-time, during Summer attendance, is measured by combining the credits scheduled for BOTH sessions. Seven credits or more for the entire Summer is considered full-time.

How do I change programs (majors) or what do I do if I come to IUP from another school?
  • Visit the IUP Veterans Affairs Office and fill out the "Change of Program/Place of Training" Form (VA Form 22-1995). It's a simple process designed to make your change as convenient as possible, since you are already in the system as eligible to receive benefits.
Note: Veterans receiving G.I. Bill benefits are required to inform the Department of Veterans Affairs of any changes from the major indicated on their certification of enrollment. It is a simple formality which should be done before you plan to officially make the intended change, in order to seek approval, and so that your benefit payments are not summarily affected. Almost always, approval is granted by the Dept. of Veterans Affairs without any inconvenience whatsoever, as long as you properly inform them of your intentions before the change becomes effective.
*To do this visit the IUP Veterans Affairs Office to fill out the "Change of Program/Place of Training Forms (VA Form 22-1995)". After that, you can pursue the intended change at your earliest convenience.
  • At the same time, you may request to be certified for enrollment for the nearest (or present) semester.

How does the College Fund work?
  • Apply for the G.I. Bill by following the regular procedures for the basic entitlement.
  • You will be processed for benefits in the same manner that has been described for regular G.I. Bill benefits. There are no additional steps necessary to be taken.
*When your benefit check is processed each month by the Regional Veterans Affairs Office, the additional College Fund "kicker" will automatically be included.
