IUP Women Picked to Win PSAC West; Tracey, Heberling and Brooks Named to All-Conference Preseason Team

The IUP women’s basketball team is the preseason choice to win the PSAC West while the men were picked to finish in a tie for fifth in balloting conducted by the division’s head coaches.

Three IUP players were named to the all-conference preseason team, including juniors Jahzinga Tracey and Staci Heberling on the women’s side and sophomore Gerald Brooks on the men’s team.

IUP was the choice to win its second straight PSAC West women’s championship on the strength of four returning starters from the 2006-07 team that finished 24-9, won the conference tournament title for the first time since 1988 and won two games in the NCAA tournament to advance to the Sweet 16.

The Crimson Hawks were followed by California, Edinboro, Shippensburg, Clarion, Slippery Rock and Lock Haven.  The men’s poll found California on top, followed by Edinboro, Clarion, Shippensburg, IUP and Lock Haven tied for fifth and Slippery Rock.

Last season, Tracey was the PSAC West Player of the Year and MVP of the PSAC tournament, first team Daktronics All-East Region and a member of the East Region all-tournament team.  She averaged 18.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game last season while also totaling 98 steals, 61 assists and 23 blocks.  Her 612 points was an IUP single season record.

Tracey was the Most Outstanding Player at Disney’s Division II Tip-Off Classic held November 2-4 when she averaged 22.0 points and 9.0 rebounds as the Crimson Hawks went 3-0 to open the 2007-08 season.

Heberling was chosen to the All-PSAC West second team a year ago.  She averaged 9.3 points and 5.2 rebounds, shot 48.1 percent from the field and made 52 steals and 15 blocks.

Brooks was the PSAC West Rookie of the Year last season.  He was fourth in the PSAC West in rebounding (8.1) and field goal percentage (54.8) and ninth in scoring (12.7) and was the division’s rookie of the week eight times.

The IUP women resume their season this weekend with games against Charleston on Saturday and Salem International on Sunday at California’s Holiday Inn Classic.  The men open their campaign on Saturday at Memorial Field House with a 7 p.m. game against Penn State Fayette.
