California ended the game on a 27-7 burst to eliminate
Millersville 70-54 in the opening game of the 2008 NCAA Division II Women's
Basketball East Regional. The Vulcans overcame an ice-cold shooting effort
in the opening half by connecting on 19 of 31 field goal tries in the final
twenty minutes.
California advances to play Anderson in the first
semifinal Saturday at 5:30.
Lindsay Johnson's game-high 19 points led four Cal (25-6) players in double
figures. Amber Dubyak came off the Cal bench to tally 14 points, Brooque
Williams added 13 and Kayla Smith ended with a dozen. Johnson also pulled
down a team-best eight rebounds for the Vulcans.
Millersville (24-6), which led for much of the game's first 35 minutes,
received 15 points from Gladine St. Julien. Raquel Green contributed a
double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds.
California used its full-court pressure defense to assume control down the
stretch. The Vulcans forced 15 of Millersville's 27 turnovers in the second
half.
Millersville led 47-43 at the 7:39 mark, but a 15-0 run by the Vulcans would
end the seventh-seeded Marauders' hopes for an upset. Cal grabbed the lead
for good with 5:31 left at 50-47 on a Johnson three-pointer.
The lead would stretch to eleven before Millersville
ended a nearly four minute scoreless streak on Green's transition layup.
Cal quickly stretched the lead back into double figures with Kayla Smith's
bucket on the next possession and the Vulcans were never headed in the
waning moments.
Both teams struggled offensively in the opening twenty minutes. Cal jumped
out a to quick 8-3 lead, but the Vulcans missed 21 of their final 23 field
goal tries of the opening half as Millersville pieced together a 22-21 edge
at the break despite shooting woes of their own.
