The IUP women’s basketball
team is the preseason choice to win the PSAC West while the men were picked
to finish in a tie for fifth in balloting conducted by the division’s head
coaches.
Three IUP players were
named to the all-conference preseason team, including juniors Jahzinga
Tracey and Staci Heberling on the women’s side and sophomore Gerald Brooks
on the men’s team.
IUP was the choice to win
its second straight PSAC West women’s championship on the strength of four
returning starters from the 2006-07 team that finished 24-9, won the
conference tournament title for the first time since 1988 and won two games
in the NCAA tournament to advance to the Sweet 16.
The Crimson Hawks were
followed by California, Edinboro, Shippensburg, Clarion, Slippery Rock and
Lock Haven. The men’s poll found California on top, followed by Edinboro,
Clarion, Shippensburg, IUP and Lock Haven tied for fifth and Slippery Rock.
Last season, Tracey was the
PSAC West Player of the Year and MVP of the PSAC tournament, first team
Daktronics All-East Region and a member of the East Region all-tournament
team. She averaged 18.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game last season while
also totaling 98 steals, 61 assists and 23 blocks. Her 612 points was an
IUP single season record.
Tracey was the Most
Outstanding Player at Disney’s Division II Tip-Off Classic held November 2-4
when she averaged 22.0 points and 9.0 rebounds as the Crimson Hawks went 3-0
to open the 2007-08 season.
Heberling was chosen to the
All-PSAC West second team a year ago. She averaged 9.3 points and 5.2
rebounds, shot 48.1 percent from the field and made 52 steals and 15
blocks.
Brooks was the PSAC West
Rookie of the Year last season. He was fourth in the PSAC West in
rebounding (8.1) and field goal percentage (54.8) and ninth in scoring
(12.7) and was the division’s rookie of the week eight times.
The IUP women resume their
season this weekend with games against Charleston on Saturday and Salem
International on Sunday at California’s Holiday Inn Classic. The men open
their campaign on Saturday at Memorial Field House with a 7 p.m. game
against Penn State Fayette.
