Cathy Hanek Joins IUP
Women's Basketball Coaching Staff
IUP women’s basketball head coach Cindy Martin has
named Cathy Hanek as her graduate assistant.
“We are excited to complete the staff with someone
as passionate about basketball as Cathy Hanek,” said Martin. “The
Division I experience she brings to the team is tremendous.”
Following
a successful playing career at Youngstown State University, Hanek joined
the Penguins’ coaching staff in 2005-06 and spent one year as the team’s
director of basketball operations. In that role she assisted in team
travel, film exchange and administrative duties.
Hanek, who graduated from Youngstown State in May
with a degree in secondary education, finished her four-year playing
career with 882 points and ranks third in school history with 153
3-point field goals. She played in 111 games, the seventh most all
time.
For her career Hanek averaged 7.9 points, 2.1
rebounds and 2.0 assists per game and shot 76 percent from the free
throw line.
As a senior she led the Penguins to a sixth-place
finish in the Horizon League with a record of 12-16. That year she
averaged 9.8 points per game while connecting on 37 percent of her
3-pointers. She was a team captain her junior and senior seasons.
Hanek was named to the Mid-Continent Conference
All-Newcomer team in 2001 after averaging 6.1 points and 1.9 rebounds
per game.
As a freshman she was named her team’s most
improved player and was the team’s defensive player of the year as a
sophomore and senior. She won the hustle award her junior season.
Hanek rounds out an IUP staff that also includes
assistant coaches Holly Sartor and Ashley Dunn.
