Women's Basketball Team Participates in Three Community Service Events Last Week

The IUP women's basketball team took part in a series of community service events last week, including a speech by Cindy Martin at S&T Bank (September 18), the Homer-Center Walking Bus Program (September 19) and the Step Out to Help Diabetes event (September 23).

Upcoming events in October include the Eisenhower Elementary School Assembly and Grocers vs. Cancer for the American Cancer Society at Giant Eagles on Wednesday, October 3.

Head Coach Cindy Martin was the keynote speaker at the S&T Bank District Managers Leadership Training Day held in Indiana.  Martin spoke to the group of managers for an hour about coaching strategies, leadership and teamwork.  She was asked to focus on how her coaching strategies parallel those leadership skills found in a corporate setting.

The team volunteered for the Homer-Center Elementary School "Walking School Bus Community Walk Day."  The team and coaches walked with elementary school kids and teachers from the Floodway Park Pavilion in Homer City to the school.

The one-mile walk gave the IUP student-athletes a great opportunity to visit with the children and talk about the importance of teamwork and exercise.  The Walking School Bus is part of a comprehensive walk-to-school program that promotes physical activity and the important role it plays in good health.

September 23
The entire team and coaching staff lent a helping hand at the "Step Out to Fight Diabetes" event held at Blue Spruce Park.  The team assisted with setup and then registered the participants who took part in the event.

The "Step Out to Fight Diabetes", formerly America's Walk for Diabetes, is about changing the face of diabetes in our country by raising funds to help find a cure.  The annual walk was held in over 200 cities nationwide.
