Boxscore and play-by-play
Shippensburg made 10 of 20
shots from 3-point land and 81 percent from the free throw line while IUP
made only 31 percent from the field and missed nine of 17 charity tosses,
with the end result being a 77-50 win for the host Raiders on Wednesday
night.
With the win, Shippensburg
(19-8, 7-5 PSAC West) moved closer to clinching a berth in the PSAC playoffs while denying
IUP (23-4, 8-3) a chance to clinch its second straight division title.
The Raiders also completed a season sweep over the Crimson Hawks.
IUP, losers of two in a row
for the first time since early in the 2006-07 season, will need to defeat
Lock Haven on Saturday and hope that either Edinboro beats California or
Clarion defeats Slippery Rock to claim the PSAC West championship.
Staci Heberling was the
only IUP player in double figures, scoring 17 points while making 7 of 13
field goal attempts. The rest of the Crimson Hawk roster combined to
make only 13 of 51 shots. The previous low point total this year for
IUP was 60 two times.
Jahzinga Tracey, who scored
36 in the first meeting between the two teams, was held to eight on
Wednesday but did have 14 rebounds.
Freshman Kasey Gardner had her second big offensive outing
against IUP this season. She made five 3-pointers and all 10 of her
free throws en route to 27 points, two more than she scored in an 88-75
Raider win at Memorial Field House on January 30.
Lauren Beckley had a
double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds while Megan Fogle had 14
points. The Raiders had assists on 19 of their 21 baskets, including
five by Michelle Metz.
IUP held a 7-5 lead on a
basket by Heberling with 14:49 left in the first half, but a 3-pointer
Gardner 14 seconds later gave Shippensburg a lead it would never relinquish.
The Raiders led 32-24 at
halftime and used a 12-2 run early in the second half to build a 45-30 lead
with 14:26 left. The Crimson Hawks responded with a 12-2 run of their
own, and Miller brought IUP to within 47-42 with a 3 at the 10:39 mark.
Shippensburg would not let
IUP get any closer and the lead steadily grew throughout the final 20
minutes. Another 3-pointer by Miller had the Crimson Hawks within
61-48 with 6:24 left before the Raiders scored 16 of the game's final 18
points.
The IUP-Lock Haven game on
Saturday at Memorial Field House gets under way at 5:30. Immediately
following the game, the unveiling of the name of the Crimson Hawk mascot
will be made.
