IUP Celebrates Move to Top of East Region and Wins 20th of the Season at Lock Haven

Boxscore and play-by-play

Just hours after claiming the top spot in the NCAA Division II East Region rankings, IUP posted its 20th win of the season with a 71-54 victory at Lock Haven in a PSAC West game Wednesday night.

The Crimson Hawk are 20-2 overall and finished the opening round of PSAC West games with a 5-1 division record.  This marks the second consecutive season and fourth time overall that IUP has won 20 games in a season.

IUP moved into sole possession of first place in the PSAC West with its win combined with California's loss at home to Edinboro.

After coming in at third in the initial East Region rankings of the season last week, IUP jumped up to the top spot on the strength of its 65-57 overtime win at previously No.1 California on Saturday combined with three straight losses by former No. 2 Fairmont State.

Jahzinga Tracey led three IUP players in double figures with 18 points on 8 of 9 shooting from the field.  Tracey also pulled down six rebounds.

Kylie Miller had 15 points, six rebounds and six assists against only one turnover.  Kierstin Filla finished with 12 points and three steals, and Lacey Claar had four assists and three steals.

The win ended a five-game losing streak for IUP at Lock Haven.  Four nights ago, the Crimson Hawks snapped an eight-game road skid at California.

Kristin Kudrick led Lock Haven (6-14, 1-5) with 17 points and Lauren Kelshaw added 15.

IUP never trailed in the game and took the lead for good at 7-6 with 3:06 expired on a free throw by Tracey.  The Crimson Hawks were ahead 12-8 before going on a 14-2 run that ended with a 3-pointer by Tracey for a 26-10 lead with 8:01 left in the first half.

IUP built its lead to as many as 19 before halftime, the final time at 41-22 on two free throws by Hillary Shope.  The Crimson Hawks held a 41-24 lead at the break  and went ahead by 20 at 46-26 on a 3-pointer by Miller.

A jumper by Filla at the 14:23 mark gave IUP its biggest lead of the game at 54-31 and Lock Haven got no closer than 14 the rest of the way.

The Crimson Hawks are off this Saturday before opening the second part of the PSAC West round robin season next Wednesday at Clarion.
