Jahzinga Tracey posted the
second triple double in school history with 21 points, 15 rebounds and 10
steals and three other IUP players reached double figures to lead the
Crimson Hawks to a 79-70 win at East Stroudsburg on Sunday.
Staci Heberling had 13
points and seven rebounds, Kierstin Filla added 11 points and four assists
and Hillary Shope finished with 10 points to lead ninth-ranked IUP (13-1) to
its fourth straight win.
Tracey joined Megan Woodall
with the only two triple doubles ever at IUP. Woodall had hers in an
80-55 win over California in the 1999-00 regular season finale.
The 10 steals by Tracey
against East Stroudsburg tied the school record also held by Bridget Adams
vs. Slippery Rock and Lisa Bendick vs. Shippensburg, both in 1995.
Jackie Yandrisevits led
East Stroudsburg (4-7) with 19 points and DeAnna Rayam scored 14.
IUP is 5-0 in crossover
games this season with games against PSAC East opponents West Chester and
Millersville next weekend at Memorial Field House remaining (both at 1
p.m.). The Crimson Hawks are 18-1 against the East over the past three
years.
IUP shot only 38.7 percent
from the field and were outrebounded 43-42 but more than made up for that
with its usual suffocating defense that forced 26 turnovers, including 19 by
steals. The Warriors had 15 turnovers in the second half after leading 42-40 at intermission.
The Crimson Hawks never
trailed in the second half but at the same time were not able to put away
the stubborn Warriors.
An 8-2 run that culminated
with a layup by Heberling gave IUP a 70-63 lead with 4:00 remaining.
However, a 3-pointer by Mel Villano and two free throws by Keri Cahill in
the next minute got East Stroudsburg back within two with 3:01 left.
IUP still led by only three
at 72-69 before a basket by Heberling, two free throws by Filla and a
charity toss by Tracey expanded the advantage to 77-69 with under a minute
left to finally give the Crimson Hawks a comfortable cushion.
East Stroudsburg led by as
many as nine at 22-13 in the first half before IUP took control with a 25-7
run that made it 38-29 in favor of the Crimson Hawks in the waning moments
of the opening 20 minutes.
An intentional foul against
IUP resulted in five points on one possession for the Warriors, who used
that as a springboard to cut the margin to two at halftime and set up the
close second half.
