IUP's latest winning streak
reached four games as the Crimson Hawks raced to a 46-23 halftime lead en
route to a 67-53 victory over Edinboro in a PSAC West game Saturday at
Memorial Field House.
IUP, ranked first in the
East Region and ninth nationally, is 22-2 overall and 7-1 in the PSAC West.
The Crimson Hawks can clinch their second straight division title with wins
at Slippery Rock on Wednesday and home against California next Saturday.
Edinboro saw its three-game
winning streak end as the Fighting Scots dropped to 14-9 and 4-5 in the PSAC
West.
With their 22 wins, the
Crimson Hawks are within one of tying the school record for most victories
in the regular season. The 1999-00 team had a record of 23-3 prior to
the postseason.
Including the final 15
games of last season, IUP has won 34 of its last 39 games and has gone 52
straight contests without suffering consecutive defeats.
IUP used a balanced scoring
attack in posting its fifth consecutive win over Edinboro dating back to
last season. Jahzinga Tracey and Staci Heberling led the way with 12
points, followed by Kylie Miller, Hillary Shope and Lacey Claar with nine
and Kierstin Filla with eight.
Heberling also led the
Crimson Hawks with seven rebounds and Tracey had four assists while tying
Miller for the team lead with four steals. As a team, IUP forced 27
turnovers and made 16 steals.
Samantha Reimer, the third
leading scorer in the PSAC, was held to 5 of 13 shooting and scored 11
points for the Fighting Scots. Rachel Johnson contributed 10 and Rae
Sherred pulled down nine boards.
The game was never in doubt
after IUP went on a 14-0 run that turned a 10-5 lead into a 24-5 advantage
after a 3-pointer by Claar with 12:21 left in the first half. The
Crimson Hawks led by as many as 25 at 46-21 on a putback jumper by Tracey
before settling for their 23-point halftime lead.
An offensive rebound and
layup by Heberling made it 63-38 with 8:03 left in the game before Edinboro
scored 15 of the final 19 points to make the final more respectable.
The game against California
on Saturday will be IUP's annual Alumni Day. A game featuring former
players will begin at 11 a.m., and alumni in attendance at the game against
the Vulcans will be recognized at halftime.
