IUP Builds Huge First Half Lead and Coasts Past Edinboro for Fourth Straight Win

Boxscore and play-by-play

IUP's latest winning streak reached four games as the Crimson Hawks raced to a 46-23 halftime lead en route to a 67-53 victory over Edinboro in a PSAC West game Saturday at Memorial Field House.

IUP, ranked first in the East Region and ninth nationally, is 22-2 overall and 7-1 in the PSAC West.  The Crimson Hawks can clinch their second straight division title with wins at Slippery Rock on Wednesday and home against California next Saturday.

Edinboro saw its three-game winning streak end as the Fighting Scots dropped to 14-9 and 4-5 in the PSAC West.

With their 22 wins, the Crimson Hawks are within one of tying the school record for most victories in the regular season.  The 1999-00 team had a record of 23-3 prior to the postseason.

Including the final 15 games of last season, IUP has won 34 of its last 39 games and has gone 52 straight contests without suffering consecutive defeats.

IUP used a balanced scoring attack in posting its fifth consecutive win over Edinboro dating back to last season.  Jahzinga Tracey and Staci Heberling led the way with 12 points, followed by Kylie Miller, Hillary Shope and Lacey Claar with nine and Kierstin Filla with eight.

Heberling also led the Crimson Hawks with seven rebounds and Tracey had four assists while tying Miller for the team lead with four steals.  As a team, IUP forced 27 turnovers and made 16 steals.

Samantha Reimer, the third leading scorer in the PSAC, was held to 5 of 13 shooting and scored 11 points for the Fighting Scots.  Rachel Johnson contributed 10 and Rae Sherred pulled down nine boards.

The game was never in doubt after IUP went on a 14-0 run that turned a 10-5 lead into a 24-5 advantage after a 3-pointer by Claar with 12:21 left in the first half.  The Crimson Hawks led by as many as 25 at 46-21 on a putback jumper by Tracey before settling for their 23-point halftime lead.

An offensive rebound and layup by Heberling made it 63-38 with 8:03 left in the game before Edinboro scored 15 of the final 19 points to make the final more respectable.

The game against California on Saturday will be IUP's annual Alumni Day.  A game featuring former players will begin at 11 a.m., and alumni in attendance at the game against the Vulcans will be recognized at halftime.
