IUP
shot 58.6 percent in the second half and outscored Cheyney by 20 points to
pull away from the Wolves by a score of 78-64 in a PSAC crossover game
Wednesday afternoon at Cope Hall.
The Crimson Hawks, ranked
fifth in the nation, bounced back from their first loss of the season on
Monday at Fairmont State to improve to 10-1 on the season. Cheyney
fell to 1-6. IUP is 16-1 in crossover games in three seasons under
Cindy Martin.
IUP has at least 10 wins in
its first 11 games for the first time since the 1999-00 team won its first
16 contests.
Jahzinga Tracey had her
sixth double double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Freshman Eryn Withers had her second double figure game in the past three
with a season-high 15 points while also grabbing seven rebounds and making
three steals.
Kierstin Filla (11 points)
and Staci Heberling (10) gave IUP four players in double digits. Filla
also had seven rebounds and four assists and Heberling pulled down seven
boards. Kylie Miller had five assists and five steals.
Martina Randall led Cheyney
with 11 points followed by Lillian Penn with 10. Angel Stephens had a
game-high 14 rebounds.
IUP shot only 28.6 percent
in the first half and trailed by as many as nine points before going into
the locker room down 36-30. The Wolves still led 49-48 before a
3-pointer by Tiffany Corle with 12:02 remaining put the Crimson Hawks ahead
to stay.
Leading 53-52, Withers
started a 7-0 IUP run with a layup and then culminated the game-turning
surge with a 3-point play with 7:49 left that put the Crimson Hawks in front
60-52.
After Cheyney scored the
next three points, IUP tallied 11 unanswered points, including two free
throws and a jumper by Filla, to build a 66-55 lead and finally put away the
Wolves.
The Crimson Hawks are off
until January 2 when they visit Pitt Johnstown in a 5:30 game.
Crossover play resumes January 5 and 6 when IUP is at Kutztown and East
Stroudsburg for a pair of 1 p.m. contests.
