IUP Overcomes Sluggish First Half to Down Cheyney and Get Back to Winning Ways

Boxscore and play-by-play

IUP shot 58.6 percent in the second half and outscored Cheyney by 20 points to pull away from the Wolves by a score of 78-64 in a PSAC crossover game Wednesday afternoon at Cope Hall.

The Crimson Hawks, ranked fifth in the nation, bounced back from their first loss of the season on Monday at Fairmont State to improve to 10-1 on the season.  Cheyney fell to 1-6.  IUP is 16-1 in crossover games in three seasons under Cindy Martin.

IUP has at least 10 wins in its first 11 games for the first time since the 1999-00 team won its first 16 contests.

Jahzinga Tracey had her sixth double double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds.  Freshman Eryn Withers had her second double figure game in the past three with a season-high 15 points while also grabbing seven rebounds and making three steals.

Kierstin Filla (11 points) and Staci Heberling (10) gave IUP four players in double digits.  Filla also had seven rebounds and four assists and Heberling pulled down seven boards.  Kylie Miller had five assists and five steals.

Martina Randall led Cheyney with 11 points followed by Lillian Penn with 10.  Angel Stephens had a game-high 14 rebounds.

IUP shot only 28.6 percent in the first half and trailed by as many as nine points before going into the locker room down 36-30.  The Wolves still led 49-48 before a 3-pointer by Tiffany Corle with 12:02 remaining put the Crimson Hawks ahead to stay.

Leading 53-52, Withers started a 7-0 IUP run with a layup and then culminated the game-turning surge with a 3-point play with 7:49 left that put the Crimson Hawks in front 60-52.

After Cheyney scored the next three points, IUP tallied 11 unanswered points, including two free throws and a jumper by Filla, to build a 66-55 lead and finally put away the Wolves.

The Crimson Hawks are off until January 2 when they visit Pitt Johnstown in a 5:30 game.  Crossover play resumes January 5 and 6 when IUP is at Kutztown and East Stroudsburg for a pair of 1 p.m. contests.
