IUP Uses Big Second Half Run to Knock Off Previously Undefeated Fairmont State

Boxscore and play-by-play

IUP held Fairmont State scoreless for a span of 6:16 in the second half, turning a four-point deficit into a 58-48 lead en route to a 65-54 victory over the previously undefeated Falcons Monday night at Memorial Field House.

IUP won its fourth in a row to improve to 6-3 on the season.  Fairmont State had won its first seven games of the year.

Fairmont State led 48-44 with 7:55 left in the game after a basket by Trisha Uhl, but IUP ripped off the next 14 points, including a three-point play by Lauren Fisher that gave the Crimson Hawks the lead for good at 49-48 with 5:33 remaining.

Jahzinga Tracey, who finished with game highs of 15 points and 15 rebounds, had two field goals and added a pair of free throws with 1:39 left that capped the run and gave IUP a 10-point lead.

Fairmont State got a 3-pointer from Jenna Eckleberry to make it 58-51, but that would be as close as the Falcons would get.

Katie Glaws also had a double double, the first of her career, with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Glaws hit 11 of 14 from the free throw line, including 6 of 8 in the final 3:45 to help IUP seal the win.  Glaws also dished out five assists.

Staci Heberling was the third IUP player in double figures with 14 points.

Molly Kiger led Fairmont State with 13 points and Eckleberry had 10.  IUP held the Falcons to 32.8 percent shooting from the field and committed only 10 turnovers while forcing 18 Fairmont State miscues.

IUP trailed 30-27 at halftime before going on an 11-2 run to open the second stanza.  Five different Crimson Hawks scored during the run, with Kierstin Filla hitting a 3-pointer and Tracey following with a basket that made it 38-32 with 5:30 expired in the period.

But Fairmont State battled back to eventually led by four on three occasions before the big IUP run turned the tide in favor of the hosts.

IUP plays its third game in five days on Wednesday when Cheyney visits Memorial Field House for a PSAC crossover game.  The contest gets under way at 2 p.m.
