Katie Glaws and Jahzinga Tracey Help IUP Snap Losing Streak to California

Boxscore and play-by-play

Katie Glaws scored a career-high 22 points, matching Jahzinga Tracey for game scoring honors, as IUP snapped a 12-game losing streak against California with a 69-50 victory Saturday at Memorial Field House.

The Crimson Hawks (13-6, 3-1 PSAC West) had not defeated the Vulcans (12-6, 2-2) since an 80-55 win in the final game of the 1999-00 regular season.

Glaws, playing her 100th game in an IUP uniform, eclipsed her previous best of 20 set against West Chester last season and Walsh earlier this year.  She hit 5 of 6 shots from 3-point range and all five of her free throws while adding six rebounds.

Glaws also passed Bridget Adams for the top spot in single season made 3-pointers.  Glaws has connected 46 times from long distance this season, one more than Adams had in 1994-95.

Tracey fell two points shy of equaling her career best.  After scoring a season-low five points in a loss to Slippery Rock on Wednesday, Tracey rebounded by connecting on 10 of 18 field goal attempts and making six steals.

Kim Nowakowski was the lone California player in double figures, finishing with 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds.  The Vulcans committed 34 turnovers, with 18 of those coming on IUP steals.

The Crimson Hawks took command of the final in the closing stages of the first half.  After seeing their 26-18 lead trimmed to one, Tracey scored on a layup and added a free throw for a 3-point play.  Tracey then made a steal and fed Glaws for a 3-pointer that gave IUP a 32-25 lead at halftime.

Glaws hit three 3-pointers over the opening 20 minutes and had 11 points by intermission.

IUP boosted its lead to double digits for the first time on two free throws by Kylie Miller that made it 37-27.  A layup by Staci Heberling capped what turned out to be a 15-3 run that ended with the Crimson Hawks in front 41-28 with 16:16 remaining.

California made its final run of the game by scoring eight unanswered points, including four points each by Nowakowski and Dani Mills, to get within 43-38 at the 11:52 mark.  But back-to-back 3-pointers by Glaws in a span of 15 seconds made it 49-38, and the lead was never below nine the rest of the way.

IUP continues a stretch of three games in five days with a road trip to Shippensburg on Monday.  The Crimson Hawks return home for a 5:30 contest against Lock Haven on Wednesday.
