IUP Defeats Barton to Advance to NCAA Division II East Regional Semifinals

Boxscore and play-by-play

Jahzinga Tracey scored 19 points to lead five IUP players in double figures as the Crimson Hawks advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II East Region women’s basketball tournament with a 75-61 win over Barton Friday afternoon in Glenville, W.Va.

IUP will take on Pitt Johnstown in the semifinals Saturday night at 6:00, with the winner moving on to the region championship game Monday night at 7:00. Pitt Johnstown defeated Pfeiffer 71-58 in the second quarterfinal. The champion of the East Region will play in the Elite Eight March 21-24 in Kearney, Neb.

In the other semifinal, Anderson will face host Glenville State.  Anderson defeated California and Glenville State eliminated St. Andrews Presbyterian in the evening session on Friday.

Kylie Miller added 17 points, Katie Glaws tallied 11 and Staci Heberling and Lauren Fisher finished with 10 each as IUP (23-8) won an NCAA tournament game for the first time since downing Shippensburg in the 1999 championship game. The Crimson Hawks are making their first postseason appearance since 2000.

Tracey hit 9 of 14 shots from the field and also pulled down nine rebounds, made two steals and blocked a pair of shots. Miller made 7 of 11 field goal attempts, including all three from 3-point range, and match Heberling with seven boards. Fisher led IUP with six assists and tied Kierstin Filla with four steals. Filla also had three assists.

Glaws broke out of a shooting slump by connecting on 4 of 8 field goals, with three of them coming from 3-point range. Glaws made all three of her long range shots in the opening half, including one with 1:11 left that, combined with two free throws by Fisher at the 24 second mark, gave IUP a 38-28 lead at halftime.

IUP shot 48.4 percent for the game and held a slim 42-39 edge on the glass. The Crimson Hawks held Barton to 38.5 percent accuracy. Veronica Johnson led Barton with 16 points, followed by Esty Flores and Jo Denevan with 10 each. The Bulldogs finished with a record of 21-8.

Barton came out strong at the outset of the second half, going on a quick 8-0 run to pull to within 38-36. But Miller responded with baskets on IUP’s next two possessions, including a 3-pointer, to give the Crimson Hawks a 43-38 lead. A free throw by Heberling and layup by Fisher rebuilt the IUP lead to eight at 46-38 with 13:47 remaining in the game.

Barton scored the next two baskets to make it a four-point game again before IUP went on the run that decided the outcome. The Crimson Hawks scored 13 of the next 17 points, with Miller’s 3-pointer making it 59-46 with 9:10 left.  Barton got no closer than 10 the rest of the way.

IUP and Pitt Johnstown met on January 3 at Memorial Field House, with the Mountain Cats taking a 69-63 victory. IUP will be looking to snap an eight-game losing streak to Pitt Johnstown. The teams have met once in the NCAA tournament, with Pitt Johnstown earning a 108-55 win in 1988 in IUP’s first trip to the postseason.
