and play-by-play
Julie Gallo, making her first start of the year, scored 16 points and
was joined in double figures by Staci Heberling and Katie Glaws with 14
each as IUP completed a season sweep of Shippensburg with an 80-71
victory Saturday afternoon.
IUP solidified its hold on third place in the PSAC West with a 5-4
record in the division (16-8 overall) with three conference games
remaining. Shippensburg dropped to 11-12 and 1-7 in the PSAC West.
Gallo (7 of 10), Heberling (7 of 11) and Glaws (5 of 9) combined to hit
19 of 30 field goal attempts, with Glaws making all three of her shots
from behind the 3-point arc. Heberling also paced IUP with nine
rebounds.
Glaws increased her career 3-point total to 96, leaving her four shy of
becoming the fourth player in IUP history to make 100 from behind the
arc.
Mame Brumbaugh and Lizzie Suwala both scored eight points for the
Indians, who entered the game ranked sixth in the NCAA East Region.
Brumbaugh also dished out four assists while Kylie Miller made four of
IUP's 17 steals.
Megan Fogle led Shippensburg with 23 points, including four 3-pointers.
Shanna Oaddams had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Phylicia Bessic had 14,
and Kim Strickland tallied 10.
IUP, shaking off losses to Lock Haven and California earlier in the
week, exploded for 45 points in the first half against the Raiders as
the Indians took a 14-point lead into the break.
IUP trailed 25-21 midway through the first half before going on a 13-0
run. Consecutive 3-pointers by Glaws and Kara Taylor gave the
Indians a 30-25 lead, and a basket by Heberling and two free throws by
Siarra Cornelius pushed the margin to 34-25.
A layup by Elise Mercer brought Shippensburg to within 34-29, but IUP
scored 11 of the final 13 points of the half, with five different
players scoring the run.
The lead continued to grow at the outset of the second half, with a
3-pointer by Brumbaugh making it a 20-point game for the first time at
55-33 with 17:12 remaining. The Raiders got no closer than 12
until the final minute.
The win achieved a milestone for IUP head coach Cindy Martin. With
16 victories, Martin became the winningest first year coach in IUP
history, breaking a tie with Carolyn Thompson, who led the Indians to a
record of 15-11 in 1981-82.
IUP faces an important PSAC West contest on Wednesday when Edinboro
visits Memorial Field House at 5:30. The Fighting Scots rallied to
hand IUP a 66-64 loss on January 25 at Edinboro.
