Overcomes Halftime Deficit to Down IUP in PSAC West Opener

IUP held a lead of
as many as 12 points in the first half and a 26-19 halftime
advantage but could not hold on as Lock Haven rallied for a 61-52
victory in the PSAC West opener for both teams.
IUP fell to 7-7
overall while Lock Haven won for the second time in 14 contests.
The loss ended a modest two-game winning streak for the Indians.
Emily McMahan came
off the bench to lead IUP with 15 points. Molly Miller had her
sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Indian defense made 14 steals, with Mame Brumbaugh and Kara
Taylor both making four.
Elizabeth Gabrielle
led all scorers with 18 points for Lock Haven. Candace Sillers
had 15 points and Ginger Williams contributed 11 points and 13
rebounds. The Lady Eagles held IUP to 33.9 percent shooting
(21 of 62), including just 4 of 27 from three-point range, and made
15 steals.
IUP trailed 6-4
before going on an 18-4 run, with six different players scoring
during the surge, including five by Katie Glaws. A basket by
Courtnay Rattigan made it 22-10 with 8:02 left in the first half.
The Indian offense
bogged down the rest of the half to allow Lock Haven to get back in
the game. IUP scored only four more points and saw its lead
trimmed to seven by intermission.
IUP was able to
maintain the lead until a fastbreak layup by Sillers off a steal by
Allison Hall tied the game at 42 with 8:22 remaining. Lock
Haven then took its first lead since the opening minutes on a basket
by Shameka Lee 33 seconds later.
After falling
behind by six, a layup by McMahan made it 48-44 with 4:43 left.
That would be the closest IUP would get as Lock Haven converted 13
of 16 free throws in the final 2:01 to seal the victory.
IUP plays its final
PSAC crossover contest of the season Saturday at Bloomsburg
beginning at 1:00. The Indians host defending Division II
national champion California on Wednesday at 5:30.
