IUP Drops PSAC
Crossover Contest at Kutztown
Complete game stats and play-by-play
IUP connected on
only 18 of 70 field goals, including just 3 of 25 from three-point
range, in suffering a 56-46 loss at Kutztown in a PSAC crossover
contest at Keystone Arena.
The loss dropped
IUP to 5-4 and the Indians remained winless in four road games this
season. Kutztown is also 5-4. The point total is tied
for the sixth lowest in IUP history and was just the third loss in
15 games all-time against the Golden Bears.
Molly Miller was
the only IUP player in double figures, scoring 13 points before
fouling out with 2:58 left in the game. Katie Glaws had nine
points and a team-high six rebounds while Julie Gallo finished with
seven points.
Mame Brumbaugh
dished out four assists and made five of IUP's 15 steals.
Rachel Weidensaul
led all scorers with 15 points while Brooke Martin added 11 points
and six rebounds. Mercedes Van Wagner had eight points and
seven rebounds.
After falling
behind 13-4 in the first 6:35 of the game, IUP went on a 12-0 run,
taking a 16-13 lead at the 10:07 mark on a three-pointer by Miller.
The Indians went on to lead by as many as five on two occasions, the
second at 26-21 on a three by Lizzie Demor with 3:05 left before
halftime.
IUP was unable to
score the rest of the half and saw its lead sliced to 26-25 by the
break. The Indians then suffered through another poor second
half shooting performance, hitting just 7 of 37 (18.9 percent) from
the floor overall and all 13 of their three-point shots.
Kutztown took
advantage of the slumping IUP shooters to take control of the game
early in the second half. Trailing 32-29 with 15:34 left in
the game, the Golden Bears scored nine of the next 10 points over a
3:29 span, taking the lead for good at 36-33 on a three by Martin
and making it a five-point game on a layup by Van Wagner.
IUP stayed close,
cutting what became a seven-point deficit down to two on consecutive
baskets by Gallo and Lauren Fisher, the latter making the score
45-43 with 4:23 left in the game. But Kutztown scored the next
six points, all on free throws by Weidensaul, to build a 51-43
cushion with 1:30 to go.
A layup by Glaws
made it 51-46 with just a tick under a minute remaining, but that
was as close as IUP would get.
The Indians
conclude their Eastern swing and wrap up the pre-holiday portion of
their schedule on Wednesday at West Chester.
