IUP Men and Women Take Second Place at Western Pennsylvania Championships

The IUP men’s and women’s track and field teams both finished in second place at the Western Pennsylvania Championships on Saturday at Miller Stadium.

In the men’s standings, St. Francis won with 189.5 points, followed by IUP (136) and Duquesne (129).  St. Francis also took the women’s team title with 204 points, with IUP second with 124.5 and Duquesne third with 101.5.

IUP athletes took seven first place finishes.  Sean Strauman lowered his national qualifying time in winning the 800 meters (1:51.27).  Rob Conrad earned a provisional qualifying mark in the javelin with a winning throw of 201 feet.  Bobby Boston won the steeplechase (9:44.50) and Alec Rice tied for first in the pole vault (15-0).

Victorious IUP women included Lauren Fisher in the 400 meters (58.52), Erica Hoffman in the 800 meters (2:22.37) and Casie Williams in the high jump (5-3 ¾).  Gretchen Colwell just missed on qualifying in the hammer, finishing second with a throw of 157-2.

Williams was also third in both the long jump (16-11 ¼) and triple jump (35-0 ½).

Maureen Newell was second in the 800 (2:24.51) and 1500 (4:43.39).  Other second place finishes by the women were turned in by Jess Moyer in the pole vault (10-0) and Gabrielle Hoffman in the triple jump (36-6 ¼).

Matt Celestin was second in the men’s triple jump (43-6 ½) and third in the long jump (21-1).  Mike Rairigh and Sam Rojas finished third and fourth, respectively, in the javelin.

IUP will host two more meets next week, including the Multi-Events Challenge on Thursday and Friday and the PSAC West Challenge Meet on Saturday.
