The IUP men’s and women’s
track and field teams both took second place finishes at the PSAC West
indoor challenge, hosted by Slippery Rock on Saturday at Morrow Field House.
Slippery Rock won the men’s
competition with 207.5 points, ahead of IUP (139.5), Lock Haven (134),
Clarion (70), California (63) and Mansfield (13). Slippery Rock also won
the women’s event, finishing with 238 points to outdistance IUP (123), Lock
Haven (113), Clarion (98), Edinboro (37), California (21) and Mansfield (8).
The IUP men took six first
place finishes, including Sean Strauman in the 800 meters (2:01.80), Jorge
Medina in the 3000 meters (9:02.31), Nate Shelly in the 5000 meters
(15:17.37), Troy Litten in the pole vault (14 feet, 3 inches) and Ceasar
Westbrook in the triple jump (45-11 ¼). Westbrook was also second in the
long jump (21-10).
IUP also won the distance
medley relay, with the team of Strauman, Medina, Eric Kruttschnitt and Bobby
Boston posting a time of 10:42.44. Kruttschnitt was second in the mile
(4:26.72), Josh LaFleur was the runner-up in the 5000 (15:45.10), and Alec
Rice took the second spot in the pole vault (13-9).
IUP won two events on the
women’s side, with Casie Williams posting the top mark in the high jump
(5-4) and Gretchen Colwell taking first in the weight throw (47-10 ¾).
Williams was also second in
the long jump (17-2 ¼) and triple jump (34-1 ½). Other second place
finishes were turned in by Maureen Newell in the 800 meters (2:26.98) and
Jennifer Moore in the 5000 meters (21:59.41).
Both IUP teams are back in
action in two weeks at the West Virginia University Shell Games in
Morgantown.
