Sean Strauman won PSAC
championship in the 800 meters for the sixth time in as many tries and Troy
Litten captured the title in the pole vault as the conference outdoor meet
wrapped up Saturday in Shippensburg.
Strauman posted a time of
1:54.13 to give him his third PSAC outdoor win to go along with three indoor
crowns. On Friday, he broke the conference meet record with a time of
1:49.63 in the prelims.
Strauman will compete in
the 800 at the NCAA meet later this month in Charlotte, N.C., and will
attempt to become a four-time All-American in the event. He was second
at the distance at the indoor meet in March.
Litten added to his third
place finish in the decathlon by winning the pole vault title with a best
mark of 15 feet, 1 3/4 inches. He also won the indoor title in the
pole vault and is the first IUP champion in the event since Doug Johnson in
1991 and 1992.
The women were led by a
pair of second place finishes. Gretchen Colwell was the runner-up in
the discus (130-8) while also placing third in the hammer (140-3).
Overall, Colwell scored in three events in the meet after taking second in
the shot put on Friday.
Lauren Fisher was second in
the 400 meters with a time of 56.94. Maureen Newell scored in two
events, taking third in the 1500 meters (4:40.72) and eighth in the 800
meters (2:21.20).
The men took three of the
top eight spots in the javelin, led by national qualifier Rob Conrad, who
was fourth with a throw of 196-10. Mike Rairigh finished just behind
in fifth (194-9) while Sam Rojas was eighth (186-11).
Rounding out the men's
scorers were fifth place finishers Ceasar Westbrook in the triple jump (46-6
3/4) and Bobby Boston in the 3000 meter steeplechase (9:35.95).
Finishing fifth for the
women were Stacie Stockard in the 3000 meter steeplechase (11:52.30) and
Erica Hoffman in the 1500 meters (4:42.72). Gabrielle Hoffman was
sixth in the triple jump (36-6 3/4) while the 4x400 relay team was eighth in
4:02.02.
Both teams finished in
sixth place. The men had 62 points while the women had 58. Lock
Haven won the men's title in a tight three-way battle, finishing with 139
points, one ahead of Shippensburg and five ahead of Slippery Rock.
Slippery Rock won the women's title with 189.5 points.
Selected IUP athletes will
compete at a meet on Thursday at Allegheny in a final attempt to qualify for
nationals. The deadline for qualifying is next Sunday with the final
field announced the following Monday or Tuesday.
