Conrad Earn All-America Honors at NCAA Track and Field Meet
Results of IUP Competitors
IUP sophomores Sean Strauman and Rob Conrad both
gained spots on the All-America team by placing in the top eight on
final day competition at the NCAA track and field championships at
Emporia, Kansas.
Strauman finished seventh in the 800 meters while
Conrad was eighth in the javelin.
Strauman had a time of 1:56.60 in a tightly
contested field that was separated by just 1:21 seconds from first to
eighth. Nick Lara of Adams State won in 1:55.46. Strauman
was also an indoor track All-American in the 800, finishing eighth in
March.
Strauman became the first IUP men's outdoor
All-American in a running event since Derek Brinkley won the 400 meter
hurdles in 2001.
Conrad had a top throw of 208 feet, 9 inches to
become the fifth different IUP javelin thrower in the past eight years
to achieve All-America status in the event. Mike Rairigh, who was
sixth a year ago, was 11th this year with a best effort of 203-1.
Andrew Vogelsburg of host Emporia State was the
winner of the javelin competition with a throw of 245-3, topping the
field by over 24 feet.
Jermaine Clayton was the final IUP athlete to
compete Saturday, finishing 19th in the triple jump with a best leap of
47-7 3/4.
