Sean Strauman (800 Meters) and Troy Litten (Pole Vault) Earn All-America Honors

Results of IUP competitors

IUP juniors Sean Strauman and Troy Litten earned All-America honors on the final day of competition at the NCAA Division II track and field championships held in Charlotte, N.C.

Strauman finished fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.68 in the finals while Litten tied for seventh in the pole vault with a best jump of 15 feet, 11 inches.  The top eight in each event merit spots on the All-America team.

Strauman became IUP’s first four-time men’s All-American since Derek Brinkley did so in the 400 meter hurdles from 1998-2001.  Strauman finished 1.63 seconds behind first place Julius Nyanso of Abilene Christian.

Strauman (right) also finished second at the NCAA indoor meet in March, coming within one second of the national title, and was seventh and eighth, respectively, at the 2006 outdoor and indoor national championships.  He is a six-time PSAC champion in the 800 and was the 2007 PSAC Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Litten (left) became IUP’s first-ever All-American in the pole vault in his initial trip to nationals.  He was the conference pole vault champion at both the indoor and outdoor meets.

Three other IUP athletes competed at nationals but did not earn All-America status.  Rob Conrad, who finished eighth in the javelin a year ago, could not replicate that performance, placing 12th this season with a best throw of 192 feet, 9 inches.

On the women’s side, Casie Williams tied for 15th in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 5 inches.  Maureen Newell ran in the 1500 meters but her time of 4:44.32 in the prelims did not qualify her for the finals.
