Five IUP athletes, led by double event winner Ceasar Westbrook, took first
place finishes at the Kane Track and Field Invitational hosted by Cornell
University on Saturday.
Westbrook, the reigning
PSAC Field Athlete of the Week, won the triple jump with a mark of 47 feet,
1 3/4 inches and had the top performance in the long jump with a leap of
22-8 1/2.
Sean Strauman had a winning
time of 49.89 in the 400 meters, just .89 shy of earning a Division II
provisional qualifying time in the event. Jorge Medina blew away the
field in the 5000 meters, with his time of 15:03.77 winning by a margin of
26.42 seconds.
On the women's side, Nicole
Blaesser won the 3000 meters and her winning time of 10:05.27 was 19 seconds
better than her nearest competitor. Blaesser was also second in the
mile (5:14.39).
Gretchen Colwell rounded
out the IUP champions with her winning throw of 40-1 1/4 in the shot put.
Colwell was also fifth in the weight throw (48-2 3/4).
Other top efforts by IUP
athletes were turned in by Matt Celestin, who was third in the triple jump
(43-2 1/2) and fifth in the long jump (21-6 3/4), Maureen Newell (fourth in
the mile, 5:15.15) and Casie Williams (sixth in the high jump, 5-1).
Both IUP teams will compete
at the Kent State Tune-Up next Saturday. The PSAC indoor meet takes
place February 23-24 at East Stroudsburg.
