IUP Claims Eight First Place Finishes; Pawel Glowiak, Marek Malopolski Make NCAA Cuts

IUP swimmers claimed eight first place finishes, including seven on the men's side, and a pair of athletes made NCAA cuts in Day 2 action at the IUP Invitational at Memorial Field House.

Both teams retain big leads heading into Sunday's final day of the meet.  The men have 814 points, well ahead of Kutztown (622), Edinboro (473) and Slippery Rock (306).

The women have 613 points and are in front of Kutztown (483.5), Edinboro (463.5), Lock Haven (355), East Stroudsburg (339.5), Slippery Rock (298) and Mansfield (151.5).

Pawel Glowiak starred for the second straight day, winning a pair of events and earning an NCAA "A" cut in the 100 back.  His time of 50.89 in the prelims on Saturday morning qualified him for the national meet and he won the event in the evening in 51.29.

Glowiak also won the 100 fly (52.33).  Marek Malopolski took the 100 breast and made an NCAA "B" cut in a time of 58.48.

Also winning individual events for the IUP men were Bartosz Ostrowski in the 200 free (1:43.17) and Danny Darvalics in the 400 IM (4:19.89).

Finishing second were Billy Schneider in the 400 IM (4:29.43), James Reed in the 100 fly (53.98) and Jeremy Butler in the 100 back (54.65).

The 200 medley relay team of Glowiak, Malopolski, Reed and Ostrowski won in 1:36.39 while the unit comprised of Darvalics, Butler, Reed and Stephen Waters won the 800 free relay in 7:20.66.

Luci Plaxton gave the IUP women a first place finish in the 100 back with a mark of 1:01.69.  Heidi Mitskavich was third in the 400 IM in 4:56.20.

The meet concludes on Sunday with prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 4 p.m.
