IUP freshman Marek
Malopolski and junior Luci Plaxton both took first place finishes on the
first full day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference swim meet
at West Chester.
Both the IUP men and
women are in third place behind only perennial conference powers West
Chester and Clarion. The men have 90 points to trail West Chester (223)
and Clarion (151). The Indians are two points ahead of fourth place
Shippensburg.
The women have a
total of 197 points, with West Chester leading with 358 and Clarion
posting 287.
Malopolski
(left), a two-time PSAC swimmer of the week this season, broke his own
school record and had an NCAA A cut time of 1:52.57 in capturing the 200
individual medley. Plaxton (below, right), a reigning All-America in
the 50 free, touched first in the event with a time of 23.78, also good
for an A cut.
In other men’s
results, Bartosz Ostrowski was third in the 50 free, lowering his school
record time to 21.01. Hamilton Terrell broke a seven-year-old school
mark in the 500 free, finishing seventh in 4:41.32 while also placing
seventh in the 1000 free (9:48.72).
The 400 medley relay
team of Malopolski, Ostrowski, Jeremy Butler and James Reed was second
in 3:28.16, another school record that had stood since 1997. The 200
free relay squad of Malopolski, Ostrowski, Glenn Sutter and Alex
Anderson was fourth (1:26.58).
Heidi Mitskavich
scored high in both the 1000 free, finishing third in 10:30.95, and the
500 free, placing fifth in 5:12.79. Her time in the 1000 broke her own
school record. Amanda Price was first in the consolation final of
the 500 free and seventh overall with a time of 5:09.59. Carlee Myers
was seventh in the 200 IM (2:13.02), two spots ahead of Carissa Lewis
(2:13.85).
IUP placed third in
the 400 medley relay, with Plaxton, Myers, Price and Natasha Iacobucci
registering a time of 3:59.18. The 200 free relay team of Plaxton,
Price, Clare Thomas and Daniella Campbell was fifth in 1:40.20.
Rounding out the
scorers for the IUP women were Sarah Fengfish, who was 16th in the 1000
free (11:07.45) and 18th in the 500 free (5:25.17), Cari Heckert, who
was 17th in the 200 IM (2:16.96) and Iacobucci, who was 18th in the 200
IM (2:17.87).
The
four-day meet continues through Saturday.
