The IUP softball team will
play host to its annual Strike Out Cancer Day on Sunday when the Crimson
Hawks take on Edinboro at Podbielski Field on IUP’s South Campus. Game time
for the PSAC West doubleheader is 1:00.
All proceeds from donations
made that day will be presented to the American Cancer Society. Although
admission to IUP softball games is usually free, the team will ask for
donations when fans arrive at the field, with that money going to the ACS.
Strike Out Cancer Day is
sponsored across the country by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
This is the seventh year that IUP has participated in this important event.
Also on Sunday, IUP will
honor the four seniors on its 2007 squad. That group includes centerfielder
Becky Lewis, second baseman Becky Petro, first baseman Hilary Tutrani and
outfielder Julie Cash.
As part of the pregame
activities, the IUP ROTC will present the colors and Lexi Lindros and Morgan
Cannin will throw out the ceremonial first pitches in honor of relatives who
passed away from cancer.
Lexi is a third grader at
West Side Elementary in Johnstown who will throw out her first pitch in
memory of her grandmother, Gerrie Tavalsky.
Morgan is in fourth grade at
North Star East Elementary in Somerset and will throw out her first pitch in
memory of her grandmother, Mary Yurcevic.
