Head Coach Sue Snyder
E-mail Coach
Snyder
Sue Snyder is in her 13th season at IUP
and has directed a dramatic turnaround in the fortunes of the Indian
softball program. Snyder took over a team that was annually at the
bottom of the PSAC standings and turned it into a squad that has
qualified for the conference playoffs nine times in the past 10 years as
well as six of the past eight NCAA tournaments.
Snyder has a record of 291-208 at IUP, and the
Indians have won 20 or more games in each of the past 11 seasons,
including seven straight years with at least 25 victories from
1999-2005.
IUP reached the regional finals in
2000, 2001 and 2005, coming within one win of qualifying for the College World
Series in 2000 and 2001.
In 2000, IUP won 31 games and finished the season
ranked 16th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association
poll. The following year, the Indians won a school record 35 games
against only 11 losses and were 14th in the final NFCA
rankings.
Snyder was recognized by her peers as the PSAC West
Coach of the Year in 2003 when IUP rallied from a 9-9 start to win 15 of
its 20 division games and qualify for the playoffs.
During her tenure at IUP, Snyder has produced three
Academic All-Americans, including first team nods for Molly Carr in 1998
and 1999 and Angela Hileman in 2002. Carr was the PSAC West Athlete of
the Year in 1999 while Maureen Hensel (1996) and Becky Lewis (2004) were
Rookies of the Year.
In 2000, Marissa Dugan was chosen as an
All-American by the NFCA. IUP has also produced numerous all-conference
and all-region selections during Snyder’s tenure.
In addition to her coaching responsibilities,
Snyder serves as a union delegate and advisor for the IUP men’s lacrosse
team and is on the state coaches committee. Earlier in her career, she
chaired the Mid-Atlantic Regional All-America committee and was the
president of the executive committee for PSAC softball.
Prior to coming to IUP, Snyder was head coach at
Norwin High School for three seasons, and her team showed steady
progress each year. Snyder was also the head coach at Northwestern High
School and a volunteer coach with the Westmoreland Gems, where she
coached the offense and pitchers, coordinated recruiting efforts and was
the primary fundraiser for the team.
Snyder was a four-year starter at Edinboro and was
named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Year in both 1989 and 1990. While at
Edinboro, she earned mention in Who’s Who Among American College
Athletes.
Snyder also pitched, caught and played first base
for the Westmoreland Gems during her playing career. Snyder was a
member of a Gems squad that finished as high as third place at the state
tournament, and she was chosen to participate in the American Softball
Association national tournament.
Snyder earned her bachelor’s of science degree in
elementary education from Edinboro in 1991.
