The IUP softball team has been recognized by
the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for having one of the top team
cumulative grade point averages for the 2005-06 school year.
IUP
had a team GPA of 3.301, the 24th highest among all Division II
schools, including 13 players who were at 3.20 or higher. Three of those
student-athletes – Julie Huebner, Becky Petro and Jenny Rodgers – had a
perfect 4.0 for the fall and spring semesters.
Also contributing to IUP’s lofty national
ranking were Amber Pangallo (3.89), Jenny Shaffer (3.81), Julie Cash (3.76),
Olivia McGovern (3.71), Sam Fabin (3.69), Melissa Klingensmith (3.65), Alex
Daughenbaugh (3.61), Pam Hartwick (3.48), Jodie Swavley (3.30) and Hilary
Tutrani (3.26).
“The team’s overall academic success is our
No. 1 priority,” said head coach Sue Snyder. “Players attend study halls
and weekly academic meetings and compete in our academic challenges each
semester. In addition, we are in contact with their professors two or three
times a semester to make sure our athletes are on the right path.
“The coaching staff has made a commitment to
ensure that their players become productive members of society,” continued
Snyder. “I am pleased to see that we have achieved national recognition for
their efforts.”
IUP is the highest ranked team from the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in the NFCA list of All-Academic
squads.
