IUP Set to Host
Slippery Rock in Semifinals of PSAC Women's Soccer Tournament
IUP
begins postseason play on Friday when it hosts Slippery Rock in a PSAC
semifinal contest at the South Campus Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
Ticket prices are $7 for adults, $2 for school
age children and free for IUP students with a valid I-card. Admission
includes a tournament program.
Slippery Rock advanced to meet IUP with a 2-0
win over Lock Haven in a first round game on Tuesday. In the Eastern
Division, Kutztown defeated Shippensburg, 1-0, and will travel to West
Chester in the other semifinal game on Friday.
The championship game will take place on
Sunday at 1 p.m. at the home of the winner of the IUP-Slippery Rock
contest. Slippery Rock is the defending PSAC tournament champion and
has won two of the last three titles, with IUP winning in between in
2004.
IUP finished the regular season with a record
of 13-5 overall and won its second straight PSAC West title with a 9-1
division record. Slippery Rock is 12-5-1 and went 8-2 in the West.
The teams split their two meetings this year,
with both winning at home. Slippery Rock took a 2-1 win on August 30,
and IUP captured a 1-0 victory on September 27.
IUP is in the PSAC tournament for the third
consecutive season and fifth time overall, taking the league crown in
1995 as well as 2004. IUP enters the postseason ranked second in the
NCAA Division II Northeast Region and 17th in the nation in
the latest National Soccer Coaches Association poll.
West Chester is the only other PSAC team in
the Top 25, sitting in the No. 2 spot with a perfect 18-0 record (12-0
in the East). West Chester and Kutztown (10-7-3, 7-3-2 East) are both
seeking its first conference tournament championship.
The top four teams in each of the eight
Division II regions will advance to the NCAA tournament. That
announcement will be made on Monday and the first two rounds of the
regional tournaments will take place November 3 and 5.
