IUP Falls to Shippensburg
in Season Finale
Shippensburg scored the winning goal with 16 minutes left in the game when
IUP accidentally put the ball in its own net, giving the Red Raiders a 2-1
victory in the final game of the regular season for the Indians.
IUP finished the year with an overall record of 6-9-2 and a 1-8-2 slate in
the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Shippensburg, the second seed
in the upcoming PSAC playoffs, improved to 14-3-2 and 8-1-2 in conference
play.
The Red Raiders took a 1-0 lead at the 36 minute mark of the first half on
a goal by Jeanine Cefalu, who was assisted by Nikki Kegerreis. IUP tied
the contest with 25 minutes remaining in the second half when Lisa Castelli
scored off an assist by Tia Kipp.
Nine minutes later, Shippensburg was the beneficiary of the own goal and
went on to break the school record for victories in a season, eclipsing its
old mark of 13 established in 1997.
Sarah Daw made three saves in goal for IUP while Shippensburg netminder
Meredith Markle posted six saves. The Red Raiders had a 16-9 advantage in
shot attempts.
