IUP Knocks Off Gannon
in Women's Soccer Opener
The IUP women’s soccer team opened its 2002 season on Friday with a 3-1 victory
over host Gannon. Tia Kipp and Laurie Nebiker both scored a goal and added an
assist as the Indians picked up where they left off last year when IUP won 12
of 17 games and earned their first PSAC playoff berth in six years.
IUP jumped out in front 32:18 into the first half when freshman Nebiker scored
her first career goal off an assist by fellow first year player Shelley Queiser.
Just over five minutes later, the Indians added a second goal off the foot of
Cora Roeder, who converted a corner kick by Kipp.
Trailing 2-0 with time winding down, Gannon cut its deficit in half when Ella
Thorsteinsdottir scored an unassisted goal with 10:12 remaining in the game.
But IUP put its victory on ice 1:03 later when Kipp, IUP's leading scorer the
past two seasons, found the net for the first time this season, with Nebiker
credited with the assist.
IUP held a 18-9 advantage in shots, with Kipp firing seven times. Indian
netminder Sarah Daw was forced to make only two saves, while Cayla Veach
stopped seven IUP shots. The Indians had six corner kicks to five for the
Golden Knights.
IUP stays in Erie on Saturday for a contest against Hillsdale. Kickoff for
that contest is set for 1:00.
