Edinboro Downs IUP in
PSAC Quarterfinals to Damage Crimson Hawks' NCAA Playoff Hopes
Boxscore
IUP was eliminated from
the PSAC women's soccer tournament and possibly saw its season come to
an end with a 3-1 loss at Edinboro in a quarterfinal game Tuesday
afternoon.
The Crimson Hawks are
12-8 on the season and will have to wait until Monday to see if they
will receive a berth in the NCAA tournament. However, with losses
in three of their last four games, IUP's hopes for a third bid in the
past four years took a serious hit.
Edinboro won its first
ever PSAC tournament game and advances to play Slippery Rock in the
semifinals on Friday. The Fighting Scots are 13-4-3, setting a
school record for wins in a season.
Edinboro jumped out to
a 2-0 lead, with Heather Weismiller scoring 11:50 into the game and
Maria Dembrow adding a goal 13 minutes into the second half.
IUP cut its deficit in
half with 15:48 remaining in the game when Brittany Pikur scored her
fourth goal of the year. But the Fighting Scots put the game away
with under four minutes left on a goal by Ashley Pulman.
Edinboro held a narrow
14-13 edge in shots while IUP took five corner kicks to four for the
Fighting Scots. Kelsey Dowling made three saves for the Crimson
Hawks and Lisa Bartolowits stopped six shots for Edinboro.
