IUP Shuts Out PSAC West Leader Slippery Rock to Keep Division Title Hopes Alive

Boxscore

IUP kept its hopes alive for a third straight PSAC West women’s soccer title with a 2-0 shutout over visiting Slippery Rock on Wednesday at the South Campus Field.

IUP won its third in a row to improve to 8-4 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC West while Slippery Rock lost in the division for the first time this season and dropped to 10-3-1 overall and 6-1-1.  The Rock entered the game ranked 22nd in the country in the National Soccer Coaches Association poll.

Under the conference formula awarding three points for a win and one for a tie, Slippery Rock leads the PSAC West with 19 points and IUP has 12.  In order to win the division title, IUP must defeat Lock Haven, Clarion and California and hope that Slippery Rock does not win either of its final conference games against Clarion and Lock Haven.

IUP also avenged a 3-2 loss at Slippery Rock on September 20.

The game was scoreless for nearly half of the opening 45 minutes before Sarah Romasco scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season off a feed from Melissa Kornock with 25:12 remaining in the first half.  Kornock has five assists on the year, two shy of Romasco’s total.

IUP goalkeeper Kelsey Dowling kept it a one-goal game with several outstanding saves in the second half, including a leaping deflection of a shot by Ashley Paganie with 11 minutes remaining.  The Crimson Hawks then put it out of reach on a successful penalty shot by Carina Honeygosky, her fifth goal of the year.

Dowling finished with seven saves as did Slippery Rock goalkeeper Lauren McManus.  McManus had six of her saves in the first half when IUP held an 11-7 shot advantage. The Rock turned those numbers around in the second half, outshooting the Crimson Hawks 11-4, but Dowling had four saves during the period to keep IUP ahead.

The game was the first of a six-game homestand for the Crimson Hawks, a run that continues with a PSAC crossover contest against Kutztown on Saturday at 3 p.m.
