IUP Season Comes to an End with 4-1 Loss to West Chester in Northeast Region Final

Boxscore

IUP saw its 2006 season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to host West Chester in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region final on Sunday afternoon.

IUP finished the year with a record of 15-7, the second most wins in school history, and posted the program's first win in the NCAA tournament with a 3-1 victory over New Haven on Friday.

West Chester improved to 22-0 in defeating IUP for the fourth time this season, including the PSAC championship game last Sunday.  The Golden Rams repeated as Northeast Region champs and will host Franklin Pierce in the national quarterfinals next weekend.

IUP took a 1-0 lead 18:43 into the game when Crystal Heder drilled a free kick over the West Chester wall and past goalkeeper Hilary Smart midway through the first half.

Several outstanding saves by Becky Dillard kept IUP in front until West Chester scored with 3:48 remaining in the first half to tie the game on a header by Michele Kolenet off a crossing feed from Rita Alton.

West Chester went in front just 3:27 after intermission.  Danielle Gerz scored the first of her two goals, chipping a touch pass from Julie Karcher over Dillard for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Gerz scored off a rebound with 24:17 left in the game, and Karcher added a penalty shot with 3:46 left to provide insurance goals for West Chester, ranked second in the National Soccer Coaches Association poll.  IUP entered the regional ranked 16th in the nation.

IUP played without leading scorer and PSAC West Athlete of the Year Sarah Romasco, who suffered a foot injury on Friday against New Haven and was unavailable for Sunday's contest.

The game proved to be the final one in an IUP uniform for seniors Heder, Dillard, Erin Falce, Shana Speese and Amanda Fecik.

Falce finished her career as the all-time IUP leader in goals (59), assists (33) and points (151).  Heder stands second in all three categories with 42 goals, 28 assists and 112 points while playing in 80 games, the most ever by an IUP player.

Speese is fifth in school history with 16 assists, tied for 10th in goals with 13 and 10th in points with 42.  Fecik is tied for 16th with seven assists.

Dillard played 3,617 minutes in goal and made 285 saves to rank fourth in both departments, while her 1.04 goals against average is tied for fourth.
