Chester Downs No. 16 IUP in Final Minute

A clash of nationally
ranked teams went down to the final minute, with a goal by Casey
McKinney giving West Chester a 2-1 victory over IUP in a PSAC women’s
soccer crossover contest on Tuesday.
West Chester, ranked
second in the National Soccer Coaches Association poll, remained
undefeated in 12 games while IUP, the No. 16 team, saw its record drop
to 9-4 and its five-game winning streak come to an end.
The game was tied 1-1
throughout the entire second half before McKinney scored her second goal
of the season with 1:04 remaining in the game. The win gave West
Chester a pair over IUP this season, with the Golden Rams also winning
3-1 on September 5.
Sarah Romasco gave IUP
the lead with 11:51 expired in the first half, scoring her team-leading
14th goal of the season off a corner kick by Brittany Pikur,
who was credited with the assist. The goal was only the sixth allowed
by West Chester this season and snapped a string of five straight
shutouts by the Golden Rams.
West Chester tied it up
with 3:03 left before halftime when leading scorer Julie Karcher tallied
her 13th of the year, assisted by Sophia Matangos. The
defenses and goalkeepers then took over until the Golden Rams produced
the late game winner.
Becky Dillard played the
full 90 minutes in goal for IUP and made nine saves. Hilary Smart had
five saves for West Chester. The Golden Rams outshot IUP, 14-8, and
took four corner kicks to two for the visitors.
IUP returns to PSAC West
play on Saturday with a noon game at Edinboro. IUP is in first place in
the division with a 6-1 record and 18 points, three more points than
second place Slippery Rock.
