Second Ranked West Chester Downs No. 16 IUP in Final Minute

Boxscore

A clash of nationally ranked teams went down to the final minute, with a goal by Casey McKinney giving West Chester a 2-1 victory over IUP in a PSAC women’s soccer crossover contest on Tuesday.

West Chester, ranked second in the National Soccer Coaches Association poll, remained undefeated in 12 games while IUP, the No. 16 team, saw its record drop to 9-4 and its five-game winning streak come to an end.

The game was tied 1-1 throughout the entire second half before McKinney scored her second goal of the season with 1:04 remaining in the game.  The win gave West Chester a pair over IUP this season, with the Golden Rams also winning 3-1 on September 5.

Sarah Romasco gave IUP the lead with 11:51 expired in the first half, scoring her team-leading 14th goal of the season off a corner kick by Brittany Pikur, who was credited with the assist.  The goal was only the sixth allowed by West Chester this season and snapped a string of five straight shutouts by the Golden Rams.

West Chester tied it up with 3:03 left before halftime when leading scorer Julie Karcher tallied her 13th of the year, assisted by Sophia Matangos.  The defenses and goalkeepers then took over until the Golden Rams produced the late game winner.

Becky Dillard played the full 90 minutes in goal for IUP and made nine saves.  Hilary Smart had five saves for West Chester.  The Golden Rams outshot IUP, 14-8, and took four corner kicks to two for the visitors.

IUP returns to PSAC West play on Saturday with a noon game at Edinboro.  IUP is in first place in the division with a 6-1 record and 18 points, three more points than second place Slippery Rock.
