Ray Schreiner (pictured below) put in her own rebound with 5:14
remaining in the second overtime period to give IUP a 2-1 victory over
Slippery Rock in a PSAC semifinal game Friday at the South Campus Field.
IUP
improved to 14-5 overall and advanced to the championship game at home
on Sunday against undefeated West Chester beginning at 1 p.m. The
Golden Rams (19-0) reached the final with a 4-2 win over Kutztown in the
Eastern Division semifinals.
The championship match will feature a pair of nationally-ranked teams.
West Chester is first in the Northeast Region, one spot ahead of IUP,
and second in the National Soccer Coaches Association poll. IUP is
ranked 17th in the nation.
IUP took an early 1-0 lead over Slippery Rock when Crystal Heder scored
her 10th goal of the season with 14:16 expired in the first half.
Sarah Romasco assisted on the goal to extend her IUP single season
record in that department to 12.
Slippery Rock had good scoring opportunities in the waning minutes of
the first half, but IUP goalkeeper Becky Dillard stopped consecutive
shot attempts by Shelly Regner and Mallory Neubert with five minutes
remaining and hauled in a hard shot by Jaimi Wilson with under two
minutes left.
Slippery
Rock (12-6-1) finally broke through against the IUP defense with just
under 10 minutes gone in the second half. A Wilson shot was
stopped by Dillard (pictured left), but Danielle Cooper put in the
rebound to tie the game at 1-1. It was Cooper's team-leading ninth
goal of the season.
The game stayed even for the rest of regulation despite several good
scoring chances for IUP. Romasco and Heder both had point blank
shots at the 66:00 mark, but Lauren McManus kept the game even by making
a pair of spectacular saves.
With 19:54 remaining in the game, McManus again kept The Rock alive when
she dove to her right to stop a penalty shot by Heder.
IUP dominated the overtime periods, taking seven shots to none for
Slippery Rock, but could not find the net until McManus was unable to
secure a Schreiner shot attempt at the corner of the goal, and the IUP
freshman put in the second chance for her 13th goal of the year to move
IUP into the final.
IUP held a 22-14 advantage in shots and both teams had nine corner
kicks. McManus finished with 12 saves for Slippery Rock and
Dillard made six stops for IUP.
Tickets for the championship match are $7 for adults and $2 for school
age children. IUP and West Chester students with valid school IDs
will be admitted free.
IUP will be seeking its second conference title in the past three years
and third overall. IUP defeated Kutztown in the 2004 final and
also won the league crown in 1995. West Chester will be looking
for its first PSAC championship in its second trip to the final.
