IUP Clinches PSAC West
Title by Defeating Lock Haven; Romasco Sets Season Assist Mark
Boxscore
IUP clinched its second consecutive
PSAC West title with a 6-3 victory over Lock Haven on Wednesday at the
South Campus Field.
IUP (11-4, 8-1 PSAC West) can
finish no worse than a tie for first with Slippery Rock in the division
standings. IUP, however, owns the tiebreaker and earned a bye in
the opening round of the PSAC playoffs, which get under way October 24.
Earlier in the day, IUP moved up to
second in the latest NCAA Division II Northeast Region rankings and rose
three places to No. 13 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America national poll.
Ray
Schreiner scored two goals and Sarah Romasco had a goal and two assists
to lead IUP to the win over Lock Haven. Crystal Heder added a goal
and assist while Carina Honeygosky and Shana Speese also found the net
for IUP.
The two assists for Romasco
(pictured) gives her 11 on the year to break the IUP single season
record. She has 41 points to stand in third place for one season.
Holly Homsher scored twice for Lock
Haven (8-8, 4-4), which is still in contention for the third and final
playoff spot in the West. Stephanie Fisher scored the third goal
for the Bald Eagles.
Romasco started the scoring with
her team-leading 15th goal of the season, tied for the fourth highest
single season total in school history. After Homsher tied it,
Heder and Schreiner scored to give IUP a 3-1 halftime lead.
Schreiner and Honeygosky scored
just over two minutes apart early in the second half to increase IUP's
advantage to 5-1, enough cushion to withstand a late Lock Haven rally.
IUP plays a non-conference game on
Saturday against Wheeling Jesuit at the South Campus Field at 2 p.m.
