Brittany Pikur Scores Twice as IUP Stays in Command of PSAC West Race

Boxscore

IUP stayed in the driver’s seat for the PSAC West regular season title with a 5-2 victory over host Edinboro on Saturday.

Brittany Pikur scored the first two goals and later added an assist as IUP (10-4, 7-1) won its seventh straight PSAC West game after losing its division opener to Slippery Rock.  IUP and Slippery Rock are tied for first, but IUP holds the tiebreaker advantage.

IUP, ranked 16th in the nation, has PSAC West games remaining against Lock Haven on Wednesday and Clarion a week from Tuesday.  The winner of each division gets a first round bye in the conference playoffs, which begin on October 24.

IUP reached double digits in wins for the fourth straight year and seventh time in the 13-year history of the program.

Pikur scored the lone goal of the first half, assisted by Shana Speese, and added a second goal with 13:24 expired in the second half, with the assist going to Crystal Heder.  Amanda Fecik made it 3-0 less than seven minutes later off a feed from Sarah Romasco.

The teams traded goals the rest of the way, with Rayannin Schreiner and Melinda Lieb scoring for IUP, and Kara Ciacchini and Angie de Almedia finding the net for Edinboro.  Adding assists for IUP were Pikur and Janel Paffie.

Pikur and Schreiner both have eight goals on the season, second on the team behind Romasco’s 14.  The goals for Fecik and Lieb were their first of the season.

Becky Dillard played the first 75:48 in goal for IUP and made nine saves without allowing a goal.  April Hunsberger stopped three shots in 14:12 of playing time.  Lisa Bartolowits and Samantha Cairns split time for the Fighting Scots and combined for 11 saves.

The IUP-Lock Haven game on Wednesday at the South Campus Field kicks off at 4 p.m.
