Twice as IUP Stays in Command of PSAC West Race

IUP stayed in the
driver’s seat for the PSAC West regular season title with a 5-2 victory
over host Edinboro on Saturday.
Brittany Pikur scored
the first two goals and later added an assist as IUP (10-4, 7-1) won its
seventh straight PSAC West game after losing its division opener to
Slippery Rock. IUP and Slippery Rock are tied for first, but IUP holds
the tiebreaker advantage.
IUP, ranked 16th
in the nation, has PSAC West games remaining against Lock Haven on
Wednesday and Clarion a week from Tuesday. The winner of each division
gets a first round bye in the conference playoffs, which begin on
October 24.
IUP reached double
digits in wins for the fourth straight year and seventh time in the
13-year history of the program.
Pikur scored the lone
goal of the first half, assisted by Shana Speese, and added a second
goal with 13:24 expired in the second half, with the assist going to
Crystal Heder. Amanda Fecik made it 3-0 less than seven minutes later
off a feed from Sarah Romasco.
The teams traded goals
the rest of the way, with Rayannin Schreiner and Melinda Lieb scoring
for IUP, and Kara Ciacchini and Angie de Almedia finding the net for
Edinboro. Adding assists for IUP were Pikur and Janel Paffie.
Pikur and Schreiner
both have eight goals on the season, second on the team behind Romasco’s
14. The goals for Fecik and Lieb were their first of the season.
Becky Dillard played
the first 75:48 in goal for IUP and made nine saves without allowing a
goal. April Hunsberger stopped three shots in 14:12 of playing time.
Lisa Bartolowits and Samantha Cairns split time for the Fighting Scots
and combined for 11 saves.
The IUP-Lock Haven game
on Wednesday at the South Campus Field kicks off at 4 p.m.
