Sarah Romasco Ties School Record with Four Goals in Rout of Clarion

Boxscore

IUP freshman forward Sarah Romasco tied a school record with four goals in a 10-1 rout of Clarion in a PSAC West contest Wednesday at the South Campus Field.

IUP, ranked second in the Northeast Region and 14th in the National Soccer Coaches Association poll, improved to 13-4 overall and 9-1 in the PSAC West.  The nine wins in conference play is the most in IUP history, eclipsing the previous mark of eight set in 2001 and matched a year ago.

The 10 goals were the most ever by IUP against Division II opposition and second overall behind the 13 tallied against Point Park in 2004.  Romasco (pictured) tied the record for goals in a game first set by Erin Falce against Penn State Altoona in 2004.  It is the most goals by an IUP player against a Division II opponent.

Romasco now has 20 goals, 11 assists and 51 points on the year.  She holds the IUP single season assist record and is second in season goals and points behind only Falce, who had 29 goals and 68 points in 2004.  Romasco is already sixth in the IUP career record book in goals and seventh in points.

Carina Honeygosky added two goals for IUP while Falce, Crystal Heder, Brittany Pikur and Ray Schreiner had one.  Shana Speese had two of IUP’s six assists, one shy of the single game record, and Schreiner, Honeygosky, Amanda Fecik and Jamie Gass had one.

IUP used all three goalkeepers, with Becky Dillard playing the first 59 minutes and making four saves.  April Hunsberger made one save in 20 minutes, and Janelle Porter stopped two shots in 11 minutes of action.  Jessica Reed made 12 saves for Clarion (6-12, 1-8 PSAC West).

Clarion avoided a shutout with 2:16 remaining in the game on a goal by Aimee Zellers.

The game was the final regular season home contest for seniors Dillard, Falce, Fecik, Heder and Speese, although IUP will play at home next Friday against either Slippery Rock or Lock Haven in the semifinals of the PSAC tournament.

Prior to the start of the conference playoffs, IUP will conclude its regular season on Sunday at Gannon beginning at 3:30.
