IUP Blanks California
to Take Sole Possession of First Place in PSAC West

IUP won its fifth
straight game and took over sole possession of first place in the PSAC
West with a 4-0 victory over California Saturday afternoon.
IUP (9-3, 6-1) has 18
points based on the PSAC formula of awarding three points for a win and
one point for a tie. IUP is three points ahead of Slippery Rock, which
is 5-2 for 15 points. Both teams have three division games remaining in
the regular season.
The top seed in both
divisions earn byes in the opening round of the PSAC tournament, which
gets under way October 24.
IUP, ranked No. 23 in
the latest National Soccer Coaches Association poll, got goals from four
different players in defeating California for the seventh consecutive
time dating back to the 2003 season.
Brittany Pikur scored
the lone goal of the first half just 1:11 into the game, assisted by
Sarah Romasco. IUP then exploded for three goals after intermission,
with Romasco scoring her team-leading 13th of the year,
followed by Crystal Heder and Carina Honeygosky.
Heder and Amanda Fecik
also recorded assists. Becky Dillard and April Hunsberger combined for
the shutout, with Dillard making five saves in 77 minutes and Hunsberger
adding one save in 13 minutes. Erin Cook stopped five shots for the
Vulcans (4-8, 2-5).
IUP travels to West
Chester to face the fifth-ranked and undefeated Golden Rams on October
3.
