Hat Trick in Record Setting Rout of Bridgeport
Boxscore
Sarah Romasco recorded a hat trick in just her
third college game, and Crystal Heder and Rayannin Schreiner both scored
twice to lead IUP to a 9-3 rout of visiting Bridgeport Friday afternoon.
IUP rebounded from a loss at Slippery Rock on
Wednesday to improve to 2-1 on the season. Bridgeport is now 1-2.
IUP
set a school record for most goals scored against a Division II opponent
while also breaking the mark for assists in a game with seven.
Romasco (pictured) is the 10th player in IUP annals to score at least
three goals in a single game.
Shana Speese added a goal and three assists, the
third IUP player to have three assists in one game and the first since
Jen McMaster did so against California in 2001. Erin Falce added
an assist, the 25th of her career, tying the school mark held by Lindsey
Tyberg (1994-97) and Tia Kipp (1999-2002).
Brittany Pikur rounded out the IUP goal scorers
while Romasco, Erica Miller and Kim Macek contributed assists.
IUP wasted little time jumping out to a lead on an
overcast and rainy day. Heder scored just 4:20 into the game and
added a second goal eight minutes later. Romasco and Schreiner
also scored in the first half to stake IUP to a 4-0 lead at the break.
With IUP using mostly its second team at the outset
of the second half, Bridgeport struck twice on goals by Sofia Hoflin and
Therese Petersson to cut its deficit in half.
But Romasco scored at the 62:02 mark and again at
75:28 to rebuild IUP's lead to 6-2. Schreiner, Speese and Pikur
had goals in a span of just 5:55 late in the contest to make it 9-2
before Chelsea Barbour rounded out the scoring for Bridgeport.
April Hunsberger made six saves in goal for IUP
while Amanda Roche had 11 saves for the Purple Knights. IUP fired
a total of 36 shots at Roche, and Bridgeport recorded 13 shots.
IUP returns to PSAC West play against California at
home on Sunday at 1 p.m. <back to
