IUP Pulls Away from
Bloomsburg in Second Half to Win Season Opener

IUP opened its soccer season with a 5-1 victory
over Bloomsburg in a PSAC game at South Campus Field Saturday.
IUP trailed 1-0 midway through the first half
before scoring the game’s final five goals.
Brittany Pikur tied the game with an unassisted
goal four minutes after Bloomsburg had taken the lead. IUP scored
four goals in the second half, including Crystal Heder’s (pictured) go-ahead with
22 minutes left.
Also scoring goals for IUP were Shana Speese and
freshmen Rayannin Schreiner and Sarah Romasco. Heder, Karly Hresko
and Melinda Lieb were credited with assists.
IUP’s Becky Dillard and newcomer April Hunsberger
split time in goal. Dillard played the first half while making
four saves, and Hunsberger made two saves while playing the entire
second half.
Christine Mongelli gave Bloomsburg a 1-0 lead 24
minutes into the game, assisted by Lauren Hess.
IUP opens PSAC West play Wednesday at Slippery Rock
with a 4 p.m. game.
Slippery Rock was picked in the preseason to win
the PSAC West and IUP, the defending division champion, was projected to
finish second.
