IUP Advances to PSAC
Semifinals with 1-0 Victory over Lock Haven
Emily Thomas scored the only goal of the game with
23:58 left in the second half, and Sarah Daw made the lead stand up,
giving IUP a 1-0 win over host Lock Haven in the opening round of the
PSAC tournament Tuesday afternoon.
The win moves IUP (17-3) into a PSAC semifinal game
at defending conference champion Slippery Rock on Friday at 2:00.
The Indians earned their first tournament victory since a 1-0 triumph
over Bloomsburg in the 1995 championship contest.
Since then, IUP has been in the playoffs only one
time prior to this season, losing to Lock Haven in the semifinals in
2001.
The Lady Eagles, ranked fifth in the Northeast
Region entering the game, dropped to 11-7-2. Lock Haven had handed
IUP two of its three regular season losses, including a 4-3 overtime
setback two weeks ago.
Daw kept the shutout alive by making seven saves
for IUP while her Lock Haven counterpart, Emily Wagner, was credited
with four saves.
IUP and Slippery Rock split two games this season,
with each team claiming a 2-1 victory on its home field. The Rock
enters the game with a record of 13-2-2 and is ranked third in the
region and 10th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association poll.
