IUP sophomore Gavin Smith has been named the
first PSAC Golfer of the Week for the 2007 fall season.
Smith,
from Stirling, Scotland, won medalist honors at the Burger King/Ohio Valley
Invitational held last Friday and Saturday in Mineral Wells, W.Va. Smith
defeated Matt Hicks of West Liberty State on the extra hole of a sudden
death playoff.
Smith had a two-day score of three-under par
139, including a three-under round of 68 on Saturday to force the playoff.
Both players had a par on the first playoff hole before Smith added a second
par and Hicks triple bogeyed.
Behind Smith’s performance, IUP took the team
title by a six-shot margin over West Liberty State.
The title was the first of Smith’s college
career. The reigning PSAC Rookie of the Year was tied for sixth at the
conference tournament last October and tied for third at the NCAA East
Region tournament in May.
Smith and the Crimson Hawks will compete on
Sunday and Monday at the Hal Hansen Memorial hosted by Clarion.
