Head Coach Frederick A. Joseph

E-mail Coach Joseph

Fred Joseph is in his 16th season as head golf coach at IUP, directing one of the top programs in the East Region.  Including three seasons as an assistant coach under Don White (1989 to 1992), Joseph has been involved with IUP golf for the past 19 years.

Joseph has taken IUP to the NCAA Division II regional tournament each of the past 11 years, winning the championship in 2005 and finishing as runner-up five times.  IUP has made the trip to the NCAA Nationals Championships five times during Joseph’s tenure, most recently in 2005, and placed as high as 12th in the nation in 1993.

In 2007, the Crimson Hawks led for most of the final round of the East Region tournament before falling three shots shy of Fairmont State for a trip to nationals.  IUP won three tournaments during the course of the 2006-07 season and finished in the top three in nine of 11 events overall.

For his team's performance, Joseph was named the PSAC Coach of the Year for the seventh time, joining selections in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005.  He was also the GCAA District 2 Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999 and the GCAA East Region Coach of the Year in 2005.

In addition to its NCAA appearances, IUP has claimed six PSAC titles, including four in a five-year span (1997-98 and 2000-01) and again in 2004.

Joseph is well known to IUP students beyond his capacity as golf coach, serving as the Director of Financial Aid for 29 years until retiring from that position in 2001.

Joseph earned his bachelor’s degree in physics and mathematics from Mount Union College and holds a master’s degree in higher education from Kent State University.  His wife Candace taught interior design at IUP, and his daughter Jennifer is an IUP graduate.
