Joseph
Fred Joseph is in his 16th season as head golf coach
at IUP, directing one of the top programs in the East
Region. Including three seasons as an assistant coach under Don White
(1989 to 1992), Joseph has been involved with IUP golf for the past 19
years.
Joseph
has taken IUP to the NCAA Division II regional tournament each of the
past 11 years, winning the championship in 2005 and finishing as
runner-up five times. IUP has made the trip to the NCAA Nationals
Championships five times during Joseph’s tenure, most recently in 2005,
and placed as high as 12th in the nation in 1993.
In 2007, the Crimson Hawks led for most of the final round of the East
Region tournament before falling three shots shy of Fairmont State for a
trip to nationals. IUP won three tournaments during the course of
the 2006-07 season and finished in the top three in nine of 11 events
overall.
For his team's performance, Joseph was named the PSAC Coach of the Year
for the seventh time, joining selections in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004
and 2005. He was also the GCAA District 2 Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999 and the
GCAA East Region Coach of the Year in 2005.
In addition to its NCAA appearances, IUP has
claimed six PSAC titles, including four in a five-year span (1997-98 and 2000-01) and
again in 2004.
Joseph is well known to IUP students beyond his
capacity as golf coach, serving as the Director of Financial Aid for 29
years until retiring from that position in 2001.
Joseph earned his bachelor’s degree in physics and
mathematics from Mount Union College and holds a master’s degree in
higher education from Kent State University. His wife Candace taught
interior design at IUP, and his daughter Jennifer is an IUP graduate.
