Gavin Smith and Cory
Stelick Named to PING All-East Region Golf Team
IUP freshman Gavin
Smith and sophomore Cory Stelick have been selected to the PING Division
II All-East Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Smith and Stelick are eligible for PING All-American honors, to be
announced following the NCAA national tournament.
The honor is the
second during the postseason for Smith, who was named the PSAC Rookie of
the Year earlier this week. Stelick is on the all-region team for the
second time in as many seasons at IUP.
Smith,
from Stirling, Scotland, had a 75.75 stroke average over the fall and
spring seasons. He had two of his top efforts at the PSAC tournament in
October and the NCAA East Region tournament earlier this month.
At the PSAC
tournament, Smith finished in a tie for sixth with a two-day score of
150 and at the region tournament he tied for third with a three-round
total of 223, aided by a 72 that matched the best round of the final day
of the tournament. At both the PSAC and East Region events, Smith
finished tied with fellow IUP first year player Nic Milito.
Including his finishes
at the conference and regional tournaments, Smith placed in the top 10
at six of the 10 events in which he competed, including third at the
Ohio Valley Invitational and sixth at the Lonnie Barton and West
Virginia Wesleyan tournaments.
Stelick,
a graduate of Groton (N.Y.) High School, led the Crimson Hawks during
the 2006-07 season with a stroke average of 75.33 and finished in the
top 10 in five of the nine tournaments in which he competed. Stelick
won the Burger King/Ohio Valley Invitational in September with a 4-under
par score of 138 and earned PSAC Golfer of the Week honors.
Stelick was also
second at California’s Vulcan Invitational, fourth at the Goldey-Beacom
Invitational, tied for seventh at St. Vincent and tied for 10th
at IUP’s Cecil Spadafora Invitational. He was tied for 12th
at the PSAC tournament and tied for 11th at the regional
tournament.
A year ago, Stelick
earned all-region honors by placing ninth at the East Region tournament
at the end of his freshman campaign.
