Head Coach Rutger Wiese

E-mail Coach Wiese

Rutger Wiese begins his fifth season as the head field hockey coach at IUP after leading the team to three consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament including two trips to the national semifinals.

A year ago, IUP won 13 of its final 14 regular season contests and then avenged a loss to Shippensburg in the PSAC playoffs with a 2-1 win over the Raiders in the NCAA quarterfinals.

Despite holding a significant statistical edge over Bloomsburg in the semifinals, the Crimson Hawks came out on the short end of a 2-0 score to finish the season with a record of 15-6.

In 2005, IUP posted a record of 14-7, losing to PSAC rival Bloomsburg in the NCAA quarterfinals.  In the final week of the regular season, IUP defeated No. 1 Shippensburg as well as Bloomsburg and Kutztown to secure a spot in the PSAC and nationals tournaments.

The previous season, IUP finished with a school record 18 wins against only five losses and captured its first ever victory in the NCAA tournament, a 4-2 win over Shippensburg that put IUP in the national semifinals.

Wiese has a four-year record of 58-24 and has led IUP into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs each season.  In 2003 he took over the program after the team started 0-4 and led IUP to 11 wins in its final 17 games.

Wiese also coached the IUP lacrosse team in 2004 and 2005 before turning his focus exclusively to field hockey last fall.

In February 2006, Wiese served as a special assistant to the United States men's field hockey team as it prepared for the Pan-American Games in hopes of qualifying for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.  His duties included running segments of practice, analyzing game film in staff meetings and communicating strategies during games.

Wiese came to IUP from Mercersburg Academy, where he was the head field hockey coach.  Prior to coming to the United States, Wiese was the interim coach of the Alliance women’s team in the Dutch national league in his native The Netherlands.

He was also an assistant coach for the under-17 national team and the head coach of the District North Netherlands team.

Wiese was a star field hockey player in Europe for 11 seasons, retiring in the summer of 2003 after playing for Bloemendaal in The Netherlands.  His teams won national championships in 1999 and 2000 and were European champions in 2001.

A 2000 graduate of Hogeschool Nederland with a bachelor’s degree in business and real estate management, Wiese also has extensive experience organizing field hockey camps and distributing equipment across the United States.  He owns field hockey camps in 10 locations nationwide.

Among the camps he has served as head coach are ones at the University of Connecticut, James Madison, Stanford, Cal-Berkeley and San Jose State.
